My Mom’s Words Of Advice…Oh…!!! (II)
Anita told her mother she would like
to marry the man studying and working abroad, and that he had promised to come
back to the country next December to come and visit her family wherever they
may be. The mother tried to remind her daughter that ‘A bird in hand is worth
more than two in the bush’, in other words; the second man being closer to her
still proved to be a better choice, and, not being closer to her only; but also
maintaining regular contact with her as at that time. Anita was obviously
determined to stick to her gun in choosing the guy that was living abroad; she
told her mother that her future was her focus which could be guaranteed better
by marrying the guy living abroad. The mother however, made another input
saying, ‘Not all that glitter is gold.’ Anita got angry with her mother and
questioned why she was persistently on the negative side of the matter; and the
mother also pointed out that she was speaking from experience. She reiterated the
fact that she wanted the best for her daughter always but it is good to face the
reality in order to achieve your aim.
Eventually it was time for Anita to
return to the city to continue with her life as usual, being early September,
when schools resume. The first action she undertook on her arrival at the city was
to call the second guy and informed him that he should stop calling her line
because her fiancé was about to return home from abroad. This second guy known as
Handy was alarmed and asked her to stop the ‘joke’, but she reaffirmed that she
meant what she was saying. Handy offered to meet with her one-on-one the
following weekend to sort out the matter. She accepted to meet with him even
though she was determined to sever relationship with him. All efforts made by Handy
to convince Anita of his genuine love for her proved fruitless; eventually, she
ordered him out of her apartment in an angry tone.
Then it was
December and the unmistakable feelings of the Yuletide filled the atmosphere.
Christmas is a season for all and sundry, with best wishes, good will, good feelings
and great expectations for the approaching New Year. Anita tried to call Moon-real,
her overseas boyfriend time and time again, but the number did not go. However on
a certain occasion; the phone rang and a female voice answered and queried
‘hello…?’ then the call was cut off. On Christmas day, she remained in doors as
she was so downcast because she couldn’t hear from the much -expected
boyfriend. So, she decided to stay at home. Three days later, being the twenty
eighth December; she decided to take a walk to the home of Moon-real which was
just in the next street. Her heart, or may be her mind; was so troubled and
filled with all sorts of thoughts regarding whether he had returned from abroad
or not.
She knocked
at the front door of the house gently and a young lady in her early twenties
opened the door and greeted her, ‘hello, who are you looking for…?’ She
answered, ‘I am here to see Mama’, meaning the mother of her far away
boyfriend. In a minute or so, Moon-real’s
mother came out and saw Anita, ‘Oh, how are you?’ she greeted Anita with a dull
voice. And she added, ‘Where are you going to?’ ‘I am just passing by’, Anita
lied; being aware that she was not expected to come by for any reason… and without further delay, she said good bye as
she turned to go. However, before she could move her apparently heavy legs; someone
else peeped from inside- Moon-real himself! As soon as he saw Anita, he
squeezed his face and returned back into the house. “Good bye”, Mama said, but
Anita was too shocked to answer; as she managed to drag herself away from the
intimidating location… To be continued.
